What are cannabinoids and terpenes?

Cannabinoids are, compounds found in plants that have similar structures to nerve chemicals naturally produced by the endocannabinoid system.

Cannabinoids are found in hemp and cannabis but also in other plants like black pepper and Cacao.

Terpenes are also found in plants and are responsible for things like the smell, taste and colour of fruit or vegetables.

What is the endocannabinoid system (ECS)?

The ECS is made up of endocannabinoids, which are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors (CBRs) that are found across the central nervous system.

The ECS is involved in regulating physiological and cognitive processes, including activities of immune system, appetite, pain-sensation, mood, and memory, and in regulating the effects of cannabis.

Two CBRs have been identified: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found in the brain and nervous system, as well as in peripheral organs and tissues and they are the main target of Endocannabinoid anandamide (AEA), as well as THC, the most known active component of cannabis.

Endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), which is more abundant in brain than AEA, can interact with both CBRs. CBD is a phytocannabinoid that interacts with both CBRs.
